“Armstrong led us to believe — during the course of our interaction with him — that he had evidence of their complicity in this situation,” Tygart told the Associated Press.

Tygart made the statements from Paris, where he spoke before a French Senate investigation committee on doping. In his speech, he followed points that USADA made in its reasoned decision on the case of Armstrong and his fellow doping defendants: Johan Bruyneel, Michele Ferrari, Pedro Celaya, Jose “Pepe” Martí and Luis Garica del Moral, which accused the UCI of having failed to act to combat doping, stating today that the UCI continues to stall on any decisive action.

“The only decisive action came a few weeks later when UCI disbanded the established independent commission when it actually started to act independently by taking off the handcuffs and removing the blindfolds that the UCI had placed on it from the onset,” Tygart said, according to Reuters.

“The UCI’s current strategy is to play a stall game, let the cycling season start, let another Tour de France occur, let another six months go by and people will forget,” he said. “Stall or delay yourself out of the problem.”

The UCI most recently defended itself from accusations of covering up positive drug tests by Armstrong, first stating that samples from the 2001 Tour de Suisse were only suspicious but did not meet the threshold for an adverse analytical finding, and then revealing that results which Armstrong returned in the 1999 Tour de France that showed evidence of cortisone use were “consistent with a topical cream”, even though testimony from former soigneur Emma O’Reilly stated the cortisone in his system came from an injection prior to the Tour.

Armstrong admitted to doping during his career earlier this year in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, but did not give any details of when he used cortisone. He is currently facing a lawsuit in the US Federal courts over misuse of US Postal Service sponsorship funds for doping.

“I’m looking forward to it even though I don’t know much about Italy, except that I’ve heard about the climbs being harder than in Spain,” Ji told Cyclingnews in Marmaris during the Tour of Turkey.

Ji is not a total stranger to Italy, He has taken part in the past two editions of Milan-San Remo, but admitted that he doesn’t know the existence of organizing newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport which gives its pink color to the leader’s jersey.

Ji hails from Harbin, a “small” city of 3.3 million people in the province of Hei Long Jiang in the far north east of China near the Russian border. “Our normal climate in the winter is -36°C,” he said. “The record is -55°C, but I’ve not experienced it personally.”

A son of a housewife and an interior designer, he comes from a family that contravened the one-child policy. He has a sister and remembers that his parents were fined 3000 yuans (around 370 euros) for the birth of a second child.

“At school, I was a runner, and I always won, so I got a chance to enter a sports school,” said the 25-year-old. “In 2002, because it was still cold for running in April, I moved to cycling and started on a home trainer. Only one month later, I took part in my first competition on the road: 12 laps around Laoshan, the venue of the Beijing Olympics for track, BMX and mountain bike. It was been the hardest race in my life. I didn’t even have cycling shoes.” He was then assigned to track cycling for the 2005 China Games in Nanjing.

“In 2006, I heard that Shimano wanted Chinese riders for their team in Europe,” he said. “They interviewed me and asked if I could cook by myself and speak English. I answered that cooking is my passion, and I can learn English, so I joined Skil-Shimano in 2007, and I’ve lived in Hengelo since. You can ask my teammates: I’m the best chef on the team! My speciality is to cook Coca-Cola chicken wings.”

On the bike, Ji has made a name for himself by pulling the bunch for hours. A worthy domestique, he has been identified as “the breakaway killer” since he brought the bunch across to escapees on many occasions during the 2012 Vuelta at the service of John Degenkolb, who won five stages and will be once again his captain for the Giro.

“With Argos-Shimano, we know how to control the flat stages,” he said. “Even the riders from other teams like Lotto-Belisol come up to me sometimes and ask, “Hey Cheng, you’re gonna pull?’ It seems like everyone likes to follow me. Usually, in 10 kilometers, I close a 10-=second gap. I always ride at 75% of my possibilities, so on hard days, I can push more.”

“I’ve learned cycling in Europe. When I first arrived, I was shocked to see people sprinting to corners instead of braking. Chinese riders have a lot to learn here, technically and tactically.”

The team opened their European campaign in Portugal with the one-day Classica Aviero-Fatima, won by Optum’s Ken Hanson, followed by the five-day Volta ao Alentejo highlighted by Chad Haga’s second place general classification result plus Tom Zirbel and Scott Zwizanski’s 1-2 finish on stage 4.

The rest of the team’s racing took place in Spain, beginning with a pair of UCI 1.1-ranked one-day races: the Gran Premio Miguel Indurain (March 30), where the team’s Jesse Anthony claimed the Special Sprinter’s Prize, followed by the Vuelta Ciclista a La Rioja (March 31), where Ken Hanson finished on the podium with a third place result.

The gallery presented here is from the remainder of the team’s stint in Spain in which they contested the 1.1-rated one-day Basque event, the Klasika Primavera de Amorebieta (April 7), and wrapped up their European trip at the 2.1-rated Vuelta a Castilla y Leon stage race (April 12-14).

Against solid WorldTour competition at the Klasika Primavera de Amorebieta, where the podium consisted of Rui Costa (Movistar), Pablo Urtasun (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Alberto Contador (Team Saxo-Tinkoff), Marsh Cooper would be the team’s highest finisher at 2:11 down.

Eager to conclude their European trip on a high note, the team focused on winning a stage at the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon. The team’s line-up included Ken Hanson, Jesse Anthony, Eric Young, Mike Friedman, Tom Soloday, Sebastian Salas, Marsh Cooper plus Alex Candelario, who flew to Spain just for the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon fresh off of helping Chad Haga place second overall at the Redlands Bicycle Classic.

The opening 194.8km stage concluded with an uphill finish where Hanson finished 11th in the sprint finale. “It was a really tough finish, and the guys were fantastic sheltering me through all of the crosswinds and into the final climb,” said Hanson. “It’s always tough to get that close in a finish like this, and I am always a little disappointed to miss out on a big result considering how much the guys sacrificed for me today. It was an uphill sprint which isn’t ideal for my skill set, but we have two more days to battle and everyone is really motivated to get a podium before we head home.”

Stage two’s finale would be more favourable to Hanson and following a long breakaway, which the team’s Marsh Cooper was able to join, the American Continental squad placed all bets on a stage win by the reigning US pro criterium champion, which they very nearly pulled off. Hanson would make the stage podium with a close third place result behind winner Juan Jose Lobato (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and runner-up Francesco Lasca (Caja Rural).

“Our lead-out once again preformed incredibly well today, delivering me in great position for the sprint,” said Hanson. “It was a good finish for me despite the climb late in the stage, and I found myself well positioned on the final straightway. But unfortunately we missed out on the win today.

“I have stage victories and podiums in the Vuelta and the Tour,” Sánchez says to Cycling News HD. “So I would like to enter into the club that has had victories in all three grand tours. It would be a great dream come reality.” Sánchez has three grand tour podiums to his name. He took third and second at the Vuelta a España in 2007 and 2009. He also inherited third at the 2010 Tour de France after his good friend Alberto Contador was disqualified.

It has been eight years since Sánchez took on the Corsa Rosa. The Spaniard finished 17 on that occasion, so why return after so long? “I fell in love with the Giro in 2005,” he says. “I thought the race had an impressive atmosphere, the towns were decorated in pink, the side of the road was full of fans and the hills were covered in bicycles.

“The tifosi are the legacy of the purest cycling. As the years have past I have taken longer to get back (to the race) than I would have liked.”

So far this season the Euskaltel rider has failed to replicate his performances from 2012, where he won the Vuelta a País Vasco. He still remains confident about his form ahead of the first grand tour of the year. “At Tirreno-Adriatico I was very competitive and made fifth on the hardest day,” says Sánchez. “In the Vuelta al País Vasco I was a place off the win on the Queen stage. I have been a professional for 14 years and I have my baggage and my experience when preparing for my objectives.”

The Giro d’Italia starts on May 4th in Naples and finishes May 26th in Brescia.

“The idea came from Will Mucke, who participated last year on a regular bike and is training to do the Iditarod in 2014,” said La Ruta promoter Roman Urbina.

“Two years ago, Milton Ramos, one of the top pros at La Ruta, rode the last day of the race on a fat bike and we have pictures of him riding the railroad bridges. He is the only cyclist who has ever done this in 21 years of the race.”

Urbina has previously entertained the idea of having a singlespeed category, but thinks there is not enough interest. However, he noted that there is more interest in racing La Ruta on a fat bike.

Urbina himself has never ridden a fat bike and wouldn’t speculate on how doing so would change the La Ruta experience. “It looks like a lot of fun. I hope in the next few weeks that Will will let me borrow his!”

Mucke, who rides for the non-profit Team CoreCo, said, “Despite now being that fastest-growing category of cycling worldwide, fat bikes in Costa Rica are as yet a total curiosity, and I get stopped to have pictures taken by giggling passers-by all the time.”

“Riding the bike here in the Costa Rica environment is just so darn fun that I can only imagine there will be more ‘girthy’ tires here in the future. While by no means a scientific report, I can tell you that my qualitative assessment of the fat bike is that while most people think snow and sand, the bike is as just as capable a machine as any in the dirt, rocks and roots.”

Mucke admitted that the fat bike can be a disadvantage on pavement due to the added friction from the greater contact area, but said it pays off on the climbs and descents, and especially in the mud.

“Such a large contact area where the tire meets the road means better traction in the loose and on the steeps, which translates into (with a 22/34T x 12-36T setup) massive climbing power,” said Mucke.

“With the bike not weighing that much more than your average 29er FS rig, I find that I can spin up hills where other spin out, and can climb most inclines where others walk. That is a huge advantage to keep a rhythm on some of the pitches in La Ruta where the crux of a gravel hill or loose trail section can be a sustained kick that can easily go over 25-degree slope.”

“I was racked with pain in Borsele,” Wild said to Cyclingonline.nl. “They took [x-ray] images then, but they saw nothing. Today the result was very clear on the MRI. I can not lift my arm or move it sideways, so it’s just pretty worthless.”

Wild revealed on Twitter that the shoulder is broken, and there is damage to the tendons. She will be out of commission for several weeks.

It was a double success for the 22-year-old Berhane who, in winning the third stage, also took possession of the leader’s jersey. Showing good climbing form in the last five kilometres, he reached the top of the Elmali, considered Turkey’s Alpe d’Huez, with a six-second lead over his breakaway companions Kevin Seeldraeyers (Astana) and Mustafa Sayar (Torku Sekersport).

Founded in 2002, the World Cycling Centre has already trained more than 620 young athletes, mainly for road, track and BMX, from more than 120 countries. The trainees come mostly from countries that do not have the necessary facilities to help their athletes reach a level that could enable them to turn professional or realise their Olympic dreams.

“It is an historic day for Eritrea, for Africa and for cycling,” said WCC Director Frédéric Magné. “It demonstrates the exceptional qualities of this rider, who preferred to remain amateur for an extra season in order to continue his progression. It is also proof of the quality of the coaching and training work undertaken at the WCC.”

Berhane was a trainee at the WCC in Aigle, Switzerland, in 2011 and 2012. He followed in the footsteps of his compatriot Daniel Teklehaymanot, who trained at the WCC from 2009 to 2011 before turning professional in 2012, with Orica-GreenEdge.

Already showing his talent in 2011 by beating UCI WorldTour riders to take a stage victory in the Tropicale Amissa Bongo-Tour du Gabon, Berhane was African Road Race and Team Time Trial Champion in 2011 and 2012 and also clocked up solid results last year in the Under-23 UCI Nations’ Cup: 3rd in a stage of Toscana-Terra di Ciclismo, 7th and 8th in the Ville de Saguenay (Canada).

WCC coach Jean-Jacques Henry is full of praise for his former trainee: “Natnael Berhane is a great guy, serious, diligent, intelligent in race situations and with a puncher’s profile for events such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Since last May at the WCC he learned to be patient and concentrate his attacking efforts at the end, as he did in a winning way today at the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey.”

“Having nationals come to Bear Creek on July 18th – 21st is a huge deal,” said US MTB Nationals Promoter Gary Kline of Bear Creek Resort. “I can’t think of a better venue to bring back nationals to the east then Bear Creek. Say goodbye to thin air and long fire road climbs, and say hello the rocks and technical descents.”

The Bear Creek Challenge will also serve as the Pennsylvania State Championships and as a nationals qualifier. It is part of the AMBC Series, the MARC Series and the MASS Series.

“What better way to prep for Nationals then to race at Bear Creek,” said Kline.”We thought it would be cool to run the identical course that we plan on running at nationals for this race. So, that’s what we are going to do.”

“Riders will have a unique opportunity to race on the nationals course just seven weeks prior to nationals. The Saturday June 1 race will include a short track and a super D. We will be offering shuttle service to the top of the mountain for the super D. Sunday will be the cross country race.”

The four-day, four-stage race is one for the strong men: it includes a short time trial, an uphill finish on stage 2 that offers a chance for powerful climbers to gain a few seconds on the challengers, a second road race with a testing 23 mile circuit and a fast run-in back to town for the finish after 115 miles, and a fast but technical 8-corner criterium in downtown Fayetteville.

Racing kicks off on Thursday with a short but arduous uphill time trial in Devil’s Den State Park – the 2.5 mile course that will take the men around eight painful minutes, the women about one minute more. In the past two years, Mancebo has dominated this stage, and as well as coming into the race as NRC leader, he can also claim the title defending Joe Martin Stage Race champion.

Powers is a two-time winner in Arkansas – having claimed the opening stage in her last outing in 2010 en route to repeating her 2009 overall victory. After a dominating performance in Redlands, it would be hard to imagine who could beat the Now and Novartis rider. While 2012 winner Jade Wilcoxson (Optum Pro Cycling) will not start, her on-form teammate Brianna Walle and Joelle Numainville could wage a challenge, as may the strong Team TIBCO squad containing 2011 time trial winner Amanda Miller and former German champion Claudia Haüsler.

Mancebo looked invincible in the final stage of the Redlands Classic, and went on to place second overall in his homeland at the Vuelta a Castilla y Leon. He will be hard to beat, especially with a team which showed impressive support of its leader at Redlands.

Chad Haga and his Optum Pro Cycling team will be seeking revenge after being unable to keep Mancebo from snatching the yellow jersey off his shoulders on the final stage of Redlands. While the team lacked firepower because it was split between Europe and the US then, in Arkansas the team will field a full team, with welcome reinforcements coming from criterium champion Ken Hanson and the irrepressible Mike Friedman.

Luis Amaran (Jamis-Hagens Berman) is also on fine form and showed he is able to go toe-to-toe with Mancebo in Redlands. His teammate Juan Jose Haedo will also be looking to add to his victory tally, and Ben Jacques-Maynes will look to turn his luck around after a poorly timed crash knocked him out of contention in the opening NRC race.

Expect to see fireworks from the young upstarts at the Hincapie Devo team: Joey Rosskopf rode aggressively in Redlands and will be looking to get some results for his efforts. Same goes for Brad Huff (Jelly Belly) who stepped outside his normal role as a sprinter in Redlands and went on the attack repeatedly.

According to Kittel’s team, when the bunch reached the final kilometer, Mark Renshaw (Blanco) touched the rear wheel of his teammate Graeme Brown and went down. The rest of the peloton plowed into them, and only a few riders avoided the pileup and were able to sprint for victory. Kittel was not among those who escaped the crash.

“It’s a shame that Marcel lost his leader’s jersey because of a crash,” said Argos Shimano sports manager Marc Reef. “He is in such good shape and today he could definitely have gone for another stage win. From our team, Marcel, Bert De Backer and Warren Barguil crashed, and they have some bruises and contusions. We’ll see how it goes tonight and decide tomorrow morning whether they can start.”

After the race Kittel tried to cope with his disappointment by blasting his music, and writing in his blog. “Up until 600 meters from the finish, everything went perfectly. Then the misery spread out before me. A crash from fourth position is not something that happens every day. From that far forward, it should not happen, actually. But never say never,” he wrote.
